This is a story about the easiest and hardest habit I’ve created – getting up really really early. The reason I can write this at 6:00am is because I joined a club of fellow creatives and get up with them every morning to work on our projects.
I never thought I’d say this, but I’m loving waking up early and getting work done.
One thing I’ve learned is that the days with the greatest rewards never start before noon, but sometimes they do start before five. In fact, if you want to write a book, start a nonprofit, or build an amazing career, you will need to stop sleeping in and start getting up earlier.
I start drumming my fingers on this, skipping the Morning Club. Then I start to murmur, “I think therefore I am.”
I start to sing, then shout that I think, therefore I am.
Then I start singing Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and dancing wildly around the apartment in my worn-out high school P.E tshirt. This goes on for about half an hour when I suddenly realize: Oh wait – it’s Morning Club time! And I hurry to get dressed and come down to make the world a better place. (Or at least try.)
1. Wake Up — getting up at the same time every morning is key to this routine
2. Brush Your Teeth — brushing your teeth gives you a psychological signal that it’s go time
3. Journal — get those thoughts out of your head and onto the page
4. Coffee — drink a cup of coffee while you do your morning reading. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t enjoy this part of the day
5. Read — read some blogs, news, an article, or a book
6. Eat — something light pan de sal or scrambled egg
7. Write Morning Pages — three pages written longhand, no stopping no editing
8. Create Your Daily Task List — write down everything you have to do today 9. Exercise — sweat every day
10. Prepare for the rest of the world: shower, get dressed and take on the day!
Are you ready to hear this?
When you make decisions only based on money and prestige, it’s easy to always say “Yes” to opportunities that come your way. This leads to a constant state of busyness and exhaustion. To be happy, we have to regain control over how we spend our time.
Ask any successful person, and they will tell you time is their ultimate commodity. So that's why they are not about to waste it.
And I'm not about to waste mine.
C’mon, join us - let’s ring the alarm!
Have a great day ahead!
